Tomorrow Monday will be barangay election in the Philippines. Also at stake are positions for Sangguniang Kabataan (SK). Already, the jockeying for SK position has reached a level probaby not anticipated by the authors of the law.

My officemate, whose relative was running for Sk position, said that there’s vote-buying going on at the SK level. Even more serious is that the SK candidate will “quarantine” the youth who wil be voting for them. By quarantine means bring them to a beach resort so that the opposition cannot “buy” them.

On the day of election, the candidate will drive the youth to the polling precinct to ensure that they will vote for him and not be influenced by opposition.

All-in-all, an SK candidate from a municipality will have to spend roughly 200-300 thousand pesos for this operation.

And what will they get in return?

Well, they are aiming for SK Federation President, which gives a salary of 20k a month. And the rest have a crack on “special projects” from the Mayor.

Kind of disheartening to see corruption and dirty politics has already crept into barangay level and to that of Sk level.

So what else can you expect from the young politicians when they mature into politics?
